Cholera-contaminated water sample in Israel – ‘No threat to public’

Cholera was detected in a reservoir to the north of it Israelwhich is likely due to the spread of the disease outbreak in neighboring Syria, the Ministry of Health announced today.

The localization of bacteria does not pose a risk to the public at this stage, as the ministry spokesman clarified, adding that the authorities have taken measures to “protect Israel’s water imgs” and regularly monitor the possibility of water contamination, especially in the northern regions of the country.

“In samples received by the health ministry over the past few days, a sample from the Yarmouk reservoir in northern Israel tested positive for cholera. The origin of the bacteria is likely from Syria, given the outbreak cholera there” the representative said in a statement.

Water from that reservoir is used for irrigation, according to the Jordan Valley Water Association. The first recent case of cholera in Syria was confirmed in August, according to the World Health Organization. Since then the disease outbreak has been spreading unchecked in the country and last month it reached Lebanon.

Cholera is usually spread through contaminated water, food or sewage. Can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration, symptoms which, if not treated, can lead to death.
