Chr. Dimas: We are building ‘bridges of cooperation’ with Greek scientists abroad

“Greece has the privilege of having a large number of distinguished scientists abroad,” said Deputy Minister of Development and Investment Christos Dimas, in his meetings in Boston, with the aim of connecting and networking the highly active Boston Greek community with Greece.

As Mr. Dimas wrote on social media:

“Greece has the privilege of having a large number of distinguished scientists abroad.

We have already started to utilize their knowledge, networking, experience but also their intention to assist and we are building “bridges of cooperation” with them.

We have the potential and the will to create a very strong and interactive network of workshops in research and innovation.

At the Greek Consulate in Boston, we met with the founding members of HIAS (Hellenic Institute of Advanced Studies) with the Deputy Foreign Minister, Costas Frangogiannis. We talked with professors Efthymios Kaxiras, Petros Koumoutsakos (Harvard), Dimitris Bertsimas and Michalis Triantafyllou (MIT) about the role and actions of HIAS, but also the possibility of a stronger presence in Greece. We have already taken the first important steps of cooperation in the field of robotics.

We also met Professor Konstantinos Daskalakis (MIT), who specializes in Artificial Intelligence. We discussed the details of how an artificial intelligence institute is being set up at the Athena Research Center, which will be headed by him and will be attended by other renowned scientists. We also talked about the Greek “talents” located in Boston and considered the possibility of networking even more effectively with the Greek innovation ecosystem.

A little later, at the event organized by the Hellenic Innovation Network, we presented to more than 120 Greeks of the Diaspora (academics, students, researchers, startuppers, entrepreneurs, etc.) the page change that is taking place today in Greece. The network and President Marina Hatsopoulos are doing a really great job and our cooperation is already at a very high level.

I spoke about the new business environment, the emergence of the innovation ecosystem and the fact that our country is now an investment destination that attracts companies with a global reach in the field of innovation and new technologies.

A big thank you to the Greek consulate in Boston for the excellent organization of the visits of the Greek delegation. “Consul Stratos Efthymiou and his associates contribute in a very effective way to the strengthening of scientific diplomacy and to the connection and networking of the very active community of the Greeks of Boston with Greece”.
