Chr. Staikouras: FATF states on alert for money laundering and terrorist financing

The need for the FATF member states to remain vigilant against the dangers of money laundering / terrorist financing in the financial sector, pointed out the Minister of Finance, Christos Staikouras, during his participation, via teleconference, in the Ministerial Meeting of the International Finance Group. Action Plan (FATF), which was held at the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington.

At the same time, the Minister of Finance welcomed the FATF’s contribution over the last two years – despite the difficulties, due to the successive global crises – in addressing the ongoing international challenges related to the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing. He stressed the need to further strengthen the ability of the International Financial Action Task Force to respond to these phenomena, which “affect our economies and societies, undermining efforts for economic development and social justice”.

Mr. Staikouras also stressed that special attention needs to be paid to new threats, such as ethnically motivated terrorism, environmental crime and the illegal trafficking of migrants.

At the same time, adopting a joint statement of the participating ministers, he set as central priorities for the next two years:

– enhancing transparency of real beneficiaries at international level,

– the effective recovery of criminal assets,

promoting digital transformation.
