Chr. Staikouras: The electricity subsidy concerns 95% of the households

At the end of May and the beginning of June, the platform for the return of the additional charges on electricity will be opened, while the payments will be made within June, stressed the Minister of Finance, Christos Staikouras on SKAI TV.

The Minister explained that the amounts that will be credited to the IBAN account that will be declared by the beneficiaries, are tax-free and unsecured.

This subsidy concerns money that the citizen has already paid in the period from December 2021 to May 2022 and concerns the bills submitted to the citizen by the providers and not the consumption period.

Mr. Staikouras stressed that with the income criteria of 45,000 euros per family, 95% of households are covered. The minister stressed that they will see back in their accounts 60% of those who paid in the previous period, deducting state subsidies and providers.

He said that it is estimated that consumers have paid 460 million euros in the previous period and of these 280 million will be returned with funding directly from the state budget.

Especially for dormitories, he explained that if the student submits a tax return himself and declares the house as the main residence, then he is normally subsidized. In case the home is declared by the parent as a secondary residence, there will be the possibility on the platform for the student to declare it as a main residence and to be subsidized normally.

The aim is to abolish the solidarity levy in the public sector

The Minister of Finance stressed that the goal of the coming months for 2023, is to find the fiscal space in order to extend the abolition of the solidarity contribution to the public sector. He pointed out that it is one of the two pending government issues along with the permanent reduction of taxes and contributions.
