“The increase in pensions in 2023 is a given, which will be much higher than initial estimates due to inflation.” This was stated by Finance Minister Christos Staikouras, adding that the amount has been entered in the budget.
Speaking on MEGA TV, the minister said that “we will have a supplementary budget for credits to households and businesses”, since a third fiscal area is also being created. He added that all additional measures have been quantified, but which ones will be implemented will depend on the discussion with the prime minister and the priorities that will be set. He pointed out that the draft of the new budget, which will be submitted to Parliament in the first week of October, will include all the interventions for 2022 and 2023 (e.g. abolition of solidarity contribution for civil servants and pensioners, heating allowance). And he stated that “it is absolutely certain that there will be interventions before Christmas”.
Regarding the fuel subsidy (Fuel pass-2), he said that the amounts have been transferred from the Ministry of Finance to the competent ministry. He added that some amounts have already been credited to the digital card and estimated that today or tomorrow some amounts will also be credited to the bank accounts.
Regarding the increase in interest rates at the European level due to the decisions of the ECB, he said that “we do not have a borrowing problem. Cash reserves amount to approximately 39 billion euros and Greece can cover its borrowing needs in the next 2-3 years.” .
He also stated that on August 20 the regime of enhanced supervision will be lifted, as he has already received a relevant letter from the two competent EU commissioners.
Finally, when asked about the issue of phone surveillance, he replied that “the prime minister honestly and brashly placed himself on this very serious case caused by wrong handling”. He referred to the moves that have been announced by the government, adding that “the government has the will for everything in the light”.
