Chr. Stylianidis: National Coordination Center for Crisis Management – Will make political decisions

The actions that the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection is going to take in order to contribute to the confrontation of the climate crisis, referred to the Minister Christos Stylianidis, in an internet event held today by “diANEOSIS”, during which the findings of the study were presented. on the consequences of climate change in Greece.

As Mr. Stylianidis stated, such studies prove that climate change is a very difficult reality that must be tackled in a groundbreaking way. “We have to deal with it at different rates,” he said, noting that immediate action was needed. “We have to move from words to deeds and this is our duty for the next generations, but in order to achieve this new efficiency we need the collectivity and cooperation of all of us”, the minister pointed out, while adding that the research of “diANEOsis” for climate change defines the problem, gives directions and specific coordinates.

As Mr. Stylianidis said, meetings have already taken place with two of the parliamentary parties, in the context of a National Dialogue that they have announced in advance. The minister stressed the need for the whole society to be involved in this great effort – something that, as he said, “can not be done with fruitless confrontations or pointless discussions that do not aim at the common good”. As he explained, the main role of the ministry is to manage the risk that should now be associated with the pillar of the climate crisis, while he added that the three keywords that connect these two pillars, namely the climate crisis and civil protection are the following: Prevention-preparedness and resilience. “With these three words we will try to reduce the impact of the climate crisis, preventing human casualties, limiting the loss of human lives and at the same time limiting the impact on property and the environment itself.”

He also explained that the key to the development of resilience is the establishment of a modern technologically upgraded National Coordination Center for Crisis Management. Mr. Stylianidis said that this means that through a new program that will have the support of the Recovery Fund, but also of other European funds, we will create a new National Coordination Center for Crisis Management where it will have a scientific database that will follow the scientific commands and checks, precisely to address the critical phase of threat and risk management.

“This Crisis Management Coordination Center, utilizing all this scientific data, will be a crisis management model that will make policy decisions to reduce the risk of loss of life and all other problems,” he said.

At the same time, he announced that a large operational program is being prepared where evacuation programs will be carried out, informing the public throughout Greece, such as the one that took place in Alepochori.

In addition, he added that special emphasis will be placed on kindergarten education on natural disasters and announced, through AIGIS, the creation of a large modern training center and museum next to the ministry, for students and young people.

“Coming here, in combination with the educational courses in their schools, they will become the ambassadors of the same treatment, prevention of natural disasters, even in issues that remain stagnant, such as recycling,” said Mr. Stylianidis.

The discussion was moderated by the Content Director of diANEOsis Thodoris Georgakopoulos and was attended by Professor EKPA and Scientific Officer of the study of diANEOsis on the effects of climate change, Konstantinos Kartalis, the astrophysicist, Director of Research , Dimitris Karavellas.
