The further strengthening of 112 and the upgrade of the Engage system, the information system for monitoring and management of the ground and air means of the Fire Brigade, in the context of the digital transformation of the ministry was announced by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Sty at the “8th International Conference on Civil Protection and New Technologies-Safe Greece 2021”.
As Mr. Stylianidis stated, in cooperation with the Ministry of Digital Government, they are proceeding with the digital transformation of the ministry with the aim of protecting human life.
It moves in this direction:
* further strengthening of 112, through the use of the possibilities provided by artificial intelligence (AI),
* as well as the upgrade of the Engage system, the information system for monitoring and management of the ground and air means of the Fire Brigade, which as the Minister emphasized is a very useful digital tool that allows the utilization of the available means in the best possible way in case event.
At the same time, Mr. Stylianidis underlined that the procedures for the supply of early warning means have already begun, such as radar, meteorological stations, “smart” air monitoring and detection systems, which will allow them to “have an excellent” flood alarm “network. , fires, severe weather and other hazards “. At the same time, drones, modern communication systems and intelligent coordination systems are also part of the ministry’s design for the use of new technologies.
According to Mr. Stylianidis, the goal of the ministry is to utilize new technologies, to strengthen their capabilities in each sector, with particular emphasis on prevention and preparedness.
However, as the minister pointed out, all this will bring results with the utilization of the “excellent human resources” available to the Civil Protection and the Fire Brigade, but also of the “specialized, high-level scientific staff of the country”.
“We must connect technology with this exceptional human potential to make Civil Protection more effective. To protect the lives and property of our fellow citizens, but also the natural environment”, Mr. Stylianidis noted and added: “It is “I bet on the use of modern technology. It is a bet on the development of new digital tools to meet the challenges of climate change.”
Then Mr. Stylianidis, referring to the digital tools already used by the Civil Protection, gave special emphasis to the Emergency Communications service 112, which as he said, is a system that utilizes new technologies, allows direct communication between Civil Protection and citizens. The minister described the 112 as an “extremely useful tool” as, as he stressed, it allows to inform the citizens in case of danger, for example in the summer fires, when thanks to its activation it was possible to evacuate the inhabitants from the endangered areas in time, Fortunately, there are no human losses, while, as he explained, it also gives the citizen the opportunity to contact the competent body in case of emergency. At the same time, he said, thanks to the possibility of geolocation, the response time of emergency services is accelerated.
Mr. Stylianidis underlined that dealing with the consequences of climate change is a priority for the Greek government, while noting that the newly established Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection focuses on the triptych: Prevention-Preparation / Preparedness-Resilience.
“In order for these keywords to make sense, we need to use technology. It is a prerequisite to use technology and its achievements to enhance efficiency in natural disaster management,” Stylianidis concluded.
