Christina Applegate detailed her day-to-day obstacles as she deals with multiple sclerosis – and how laughter and good friendships are the best medicine. The actress spoke about the disease in a podcast this week.
“It’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to me in my entire life,” Applegate said in an interview with the “Armchair Expert” podcast. “I hate it and I'm very angry about it. It’s something you can’t get over.”
Applegate shared in August 2021 that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. She has spoken out about her dealings with it ever since.
“I have 30 lesions on my brain,” revealed the actress. “The biggest one is behind my right eye, so my eye hurts a lot.”
Sometimes, she said, she feels a “weird” sensation in her hand and feels something like a seizure “in her brain, but not at the same time.”
Adding a little lightness to her life was something that helped her get through it all. According to Applegate, that and connecting with “The Sopranos” actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who was also diagnosed with the disease and has lived with multiple sclerosis for more than 20 years.
“I make jokes… I make these jokes because if I don't, I'll suffocate. I will be finished. I'm not ready to heal [emocionalmente sobre o diagnóstico] still and I'm being very honest,” she said. “I will reach this stage. But when someone asks me, ‘have you accepted this as your new normal?’, no… absolutely not.”
In an effort to help others who also live with multiple sclerosis, Applegate and Sigler teamed up on the “MeSsy” podcast, which launched in March. The production was based on hours and hours of phone calls between the two about the experience they share due to the disease.
“It was healing,” Applegate said. “We always talk about if she and I could function as one person, we would be the most perfect disabled person, because she's like, 'We have to find the light and we have to keep moving forward,' whereas I'm like, ' f- this'.”
“MS brought us together,” Sigler previously said in an interview with the magazine People about the partnership.
“We have each other and that’s helped us a lot,” Applegate said on the podcast.
