Christine Lagarde urged to adopt a law on cryptocurrencies as soon as possible amid the conflict in Ukraine

The President of the European Central Bank, at a meeting of ministers of economy and finance, politicians and experts, called for decisive action against Russia.

Christine Lagarde said that the bank should urgently review the bill on the regulation of cryptocurrencies in the European Union (MiCA), as the situation in Ukraine requires:

“Whenever there is any prohibition, there is always a criminal way to get around this prohibition. Therefore, it is imperative that the MiCA be adopted as quickly as possible. We already have the legal framework in place to prevent cryptocurrencies from being used to circumvent EU sanctions.”

The bill was submitted to the European Commission in September 2020, and in November last year it was accepted for consideration. However, the term itself has existed since 2015: then the European Commission and the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) first formulated the need for a document clarifying the position of the European Union regarding bitcoins and other digital currencies.

Recall that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mikhail Fedorov published a statement in which he called on cryptocurrency exchanges to block the accounts of users from Russia.
