Christmas 2020, what can be done and what not: the answers to all doubts

Between the chromatic range of the regions of the past weeks and the days of the calendar marked in yellow, red and orange, there are many who do not have clear ideas about the things that can and cannot be done during the 2020 Christmas holidays, the first to be overshadowed by Covid-19. The restrictions imposed by the government and announced on the evening of Friday 18 December by the new Dpcm leave some doubts uncovered and do not dwell on some exceptions that it is necessary to remember to spend Christmas safely: from the actual number of people who can gather around the table to the need or not of self-certification, from the possibility of following the presence to the ban on leaving one’s region on red days, here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions of Italians.

Is it necessary to stay at home only with family members on Christmas day?
No, it is possible to invite no more than 2 people, family or friends, who can add their children under 14 or disabled people. Or, always moving in 2 (plus children) you can go to the home of another family unit.

Can a family of 4 with children over the age of 14 move to their grandparents for Christmas?
No, a family of 4 with 2 children under age but over 14 cannot move. If you want to spend Christmas day with your grandparents, the latter will have to go to their house ”.

Is it possible to divide up by having Christmas lunch in one house and dinner in another?
No, it is allowed to move to a house only once a day.

Do I need self-certification to visit other people?
Yes, to move on foot or by any means on holidays and the day before holidays, it is always necessary to justify the move. However, it is not necessary to indicate in the form the names of the people who are going to meet: only the departure and arrival addresses.

Will there always be a curfew?
Yes, the movements are allowed only from 5 to 22 and: On the first of the year, however, from 7 to 22.

Can I travel outside the region to visit my parents?
By December 20, yes. From 21 to 6 January it will not be possible and unless the residence in the family home has been maintained.

Is it allowed to leave the house to go to mass on holidays?
Yes. On Christmas Eve, the CEI anticipates the services in order to allow them to return home by 10 pm. The invitation is to go to the church closest to home and to bring the self-certification. During the ceremony it will be necessary, as always, to keep the distance and the mask.

What rules apply to reach the second home in your region or another?
If the second home is in another region, it can be reached by December 20, because from the 21st the block of mobility between the regions starts. If the second home is in your region, you can also reach it between December 24th and January 6th.

If I am in a second home in another region, can I return to the first home before January 7th?
Yes, the return to one’s residence, domicile or home is always allowed.

Is it possible to go to the hotel even during the red days?
The hotels, agritourisms, bed & breakfasts are open and it is possible to reach them only if you are in your region until 23 December, from 28 to 30 December or 4 January. You can go home whenever you want, even on red zone days.

Will the bars and restaurants be open?
They are open until 6pm until December 23rd: from December 24th to January 6th they will be closed and will be able to work only with take-away or home. On red days it is allowed to go out until 10pm to collect take-away food.

Is it possible to book a stay with friends on New Year’s Eve or get together to celebrate?
No, parties and gatherings of any kind are absolutely forbidden. You can stay in a hotel following the rules set out in the guidelines.

Is it possible to go abroad?
Yes, but those who go abroad for tourism or to rejoin family members on their return to Italy will have to spend 14 days in quarantine.
