Christmas in New York: 6 programs to enjoy the celebration in the city

As the end of the year approaches, the Big Apple transforms into a true show of lights, themed activities and a multitude of unmissable programs that make any visitor feel the Christmas spirit. From the classic decorated windows to the famous Rockefeller Center tree, every corner is a tour in itself.

Another highlight of the season are the ice skating rinks, which offer an experience that makes you feel like you’re in a movie. Furthermore, the Christmas markets spread across the city bring together handicrafts, typical foods and various souvenirs. And, of course, we can’t forget the musical shows, which attract both residents and tourists.

There are so many activities and attractions, it’s normal to be unsure of where to start. To help you, check out a list of some classics that will make all the difference in your itinerary.

  • Skating in Central Park

There are several ice skating rinks spread across the city and one of the most traditional is the one in Central Park, Wollman Rink.

Located in the southern part of the park, this track is very wide and offers a great view of the Manhattan skyline. During the winter, it is a popular spot for skaters of all ages, with skate rentals available on site.

The price for adults starts at US$15 (around R$87) per session and children (up to 12 years old) pay US$10 (around R$58) per session. Skate rentals cost US$12 (around R$70). And make a note: this season, it remains open until March 12, 2025.

  • Admire the decorated houses in Dyker Heights

Have you ever heard of Dyker Heights, Brooklyn ? The neighborhood is famous for its elaborate Christmas light displays and decorations, with many homes transformed into spectacles. Residents compete to create the most impressive decorations, even using giant inflatables.

The streets are full of visitors who walk to admire the creations and take the opportunity to take photos in front of the decorations. If you want to visit, it is recommended to go at night, when the lights are on, to make the most of the magic of the place.

  • Watch The Rockettes show

Watching the Rockettes show, specifically the “Radio City Christmas Spectacular”, is a New York Christmas classic. Known for their synchronous choreography, they present a show that combines dance, music and visual effects.

The show, which takes place at Radio City Music Hall and lasts about 1h30, includes classic numbers, such as “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and “Christmas Wish”, in addition to other Christmas themes. It is an event that attracts both tourists and residents and is a tradition for many families – the show has existed since 1933.

There are more than 140 artists and, just to give you an idea of ​​the magnitude of the show, around 27 thousand kg of props are used every year.

Ticket prices vary depending on seat location, but generally cost US$75 to US$200 (R$436 to R$1,160).

This season the shows began on November 8th and continue until January 5th, 2025, with several daily performances, especially during the peak of the holiday season. It’s worth purchasing tickets in advance, as the show tends to sell out quickly!

  • See the Rockefeller Center tree

Who has never dreamed of seeing the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree? Standing more than 20 meters tall, this symbol of Christmas in the Big Apple is decorated with thousands of lights and has become a true postcard of the holiday season.

The good news is that you don’t have to pay to see the tree. Access is free and open to the public.

Plus, there’s an ice skating rink on site, so you can admire the tree while doing this fun program – and still get some great clicks. To skate, you need to buy a ticket, and it is recommended to book in advance, especially during busier periods.

Prices range from US$21 (R$122) to US$114 (R$663) per person, depending on the date and time, with skate rental included.

  • Enjoy Christmas fairs

If there’s a place where you can feel the Christmas spirit, it’s at the fairs spread across the city. Try typical drinks and foods, watch themed performances, find decorations to decorate your home, souvenirs for loved ones, ice skating areas and music shows. Phew! This is just a taste of what they offer.

There are several spread across the city and we highlight some that are – very – worth it.

Winter Village at Bryant Park: features an outdoor market with more than 100 cabins selling crafts, gifts, food and drinks. There is a free ice skating rink and attractions such as live shows. It is one of the most popular fairs in the city.

Union Square Holiday Market: Known for its variety of artisanal and local goods, it features artist and vendor booths offering everything from gourmet food to jewelry and decor items.

Columbus Circle Holiday Market: located near Central Park, this fair has a more intimate and sophisticated feel, with artisanal products and local delicacies.

Luna Park Holiday Market: located in the famous Coney Island park, in addition to food and craft stalls, it offers attractions such as rides and special events for children.

  • Be enchanted by the decoration of Fifth Avenue

Walking through the streets of New York during the holiday season is synonymous with finding decorations practically on every corner. But this avenue in particular is perfect for Christmas and will delight you. There, several stores have themed windows, decorate their buildings and even put on presentations and light shows at night.

Some examples are Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and FAO Schwarz. But be prepared: the streets in the region are crowded at night, especially around Christmas and on weekends.
