Christmas lunch? From tortellini to turkey, here’s where it costs the most in the world

THEChristmas lunch? Where turkey is eaten there are the highest costs, with Spain in second place
place after Germany, while poultry weighs more in Italy. This is what we learn from a study conducted by the social investment platform eToro on the costs of festive meals in 12 countries around the worldtaking into consideration the most popular recipe during lunch (in some cases dinner) on December 25th.

Who spends more and who less

German families are the ones most likely to face Christmas dinners
expensive in the world: a typical German Christmas lunch, based on roast goose and
trimmings, including bacon, apples and onions, will cost 66.7 euros for a family of
four people, with the 3 kg goose which alone costs almost 58 euros. Immediately after the Germans there are the Spaniards, who with 60.9 euros manage to compose a dinner consisting of turkey, with apples, raisins and onions. In third place was Italy, for which a lunch based on tortellini in capon broth was taken as a sample, in which, it is precisely the poultry that drives up the price: a family
of four people has to spend 47.6 euros. On the other hand, the families that will spend the least, at the bottom of the ranking, are the Romanian ones: the typical banquet based on sarmale and typical accompaniments such as sour cream and hot peppers would cost a family of four only 25.9 euros.

Who is the exception

To enjoy the traditional British “Christmas dinner” (which, however, is served from 12 onwards on 25 December), which is based on turkey and a classic side dish of Brussels sprouts, roasted potatoes, mashed potatoes or boiled carrots, families will have to pay “only” 32.5 euros. An exception due to the fact that turkey costs are significantly lower in the UK. Because? Ben Laidler, Global Markets Strategist at eToro, said: «Price data also shows that many inflationary pressures are local, with large cost differences between countries, some of which are neighbours. One thing for sure is that traditional poultry dishes – whether it’s goose or turkey – drive up the cost of Christmas dinners, with prices feeling the pressure of recent bird flu culling in Europe. This could drive demand for cheaper protein sources this Christmas.”

Blame it on inflation
