Inflation of products consumed at Christmas was above the price index for goods and services in general in Brazil. In the accumulated from December 2021 to November 2022, the first was 11.03% against 4.53% for the second.
The numbers are from research by the Brazilian Institute of Economics of the GetĂșlio Vargas Foundation (FGV Ibre), which uses the Consumer Price Index â Internal Availability (IPC-DI) as a basis.
The group of foods that make up the Christmas dinner recorded an increase of 16.48% in the period. The main rises came from onions (167.62%), fruits (38.82%), wheat flour (30%), mayonnaise (29.93%) and potatoes (29.92%).
Matheus Peçanha, a researcher at FGV Ibre, points out that food has been the âvillainsâ of inflation for at least three years, especially due to climate problems.
âThese are crop problems in sequence. Small producers, who are primarily responsible for providing products to the Brazilian table, have suffered, lost income, without being able to renew production. As a result, we had a reduction in the area planted with various fruit and vegetable productsâ, he says.
In relation to Christmas gifts, inflation was 6.95% in the last 12 months. The biggest contribution came from apparel (10.62%), followed by accessories (6.38%), recreation and culture (5.89%), health and beauty (5.68%) and electronics (0.34%). .
Matheus Peçanha assesses that the survey results call for conscious consumption by Brazilians due to the expectation of continued price increases in 2023.
âThis inflationary scenario for next year is increasingly deteriorating due to what is expected from fiscal policy, which should keep prices under pressure, despite signs of recession in the world and several raw materials practically on saleâ , put.
Given this, the economist suggests that the consumer be aware of offers and savings possibilities at Christmas.
âFor food, look for deals in wholesale. Gather family members to buy wholesale items and earn discounts. With regard to gifts, opt for items of lesser value. Do not take a step bigger than the leg to not get into debtâ, he advises.
