Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Christmas sales in Brazil grew 11.1% in 2021, compared to the same period last year, according to the Cielo Expanded Retail Index (ICVA).
The period evaluated was the week between December 19th and 25th. Among the highlights, e-commerce registered an increase of 38.6%, while physical sales increased by 8.8%.
Santa Catarina was the state that most increased its sales, with sales 14.4% higher than the same period last year, followed by Rio de Janeiro (13.3%) and Minas Gerais (9.3%).
The ICVA also assessed which categories had the greatest movement in profits. The Tourism and Transport sector leads the soaring index, with an increase of 73% in revenue.
Just behind are items from Bookstores, Stationery and the like, with a 15.9% increase in sales this Christmas. Other areas such as clothing, sporting goods, jewelry stores also had a considerable increase.
The lowest sales index was with specialized food retail, such as chocolate, beverage and candy stores, which increased their sales by just 1.9%.
In general, Pedro Lippi, Head of Intelligence at Cielo, assesses that retail sales at Christmas had a better behavior than that observed on Black Friday in November.
He explains that the major highlight of e-commerce was driven by sales in the Tourism and Transport sector. “Without this sector, e-commerce would have a growth of 23.2%”, he says.
