Christmas weekend has 15 unsuitable beaches on the coast of São Paulo

With crowded beaches due to the holiday, the coast of São Paulo has 15 beaches unsuitable for swimming this Christmas weekend.

There are three bad beaches more than a week ago, according to monitoring released by the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (Cetesb) on Friday (23).

In the previous survey there were 12. The higher number is due to the inclusion of the seven beaches in Santos on the list of unsuitable beaches. A week ago, they were all in good bathing condition.

On the north coast, Ubatuba and Ilhabela have two red flag beaches in each city. In the same region, all the beaches of Caraguatatuba and São Sebastião are in good condition.

In Baixada Santista, in addition to the beaches of Santos, two beaches in Guarujá are in bad shape, one in São Vicente and the other in Mongaguá. The only beach in Cubatão and all those in Praia Grande, Itanhaém and Peruíbe are good, as are the beaches of Iguape and Ilha Comprida on the south coast. Those in Cananéia are not monitored.

Cetesb weekly assesses the bathing conditions of 175 beaches along the entire coast of São Paulo. The classification takes into account the amount of bacteria found in water, especially those originating from sewage.

The beach is considered unsuitable for swimming when the sea water concentrates more than 100 bacterial colonies in every 100 ml of water. In this case, the strip of sand is marked with a red flag. Longer beaches are divided and monitored at more than one point.

According to Cetesb, the red flag indicates to the bather that bathing in that place may pose a health risk. A beach can also be considered unsuitable for swimming due to the accumulation of algae or when stains appear as a result of oil spills in the sea.

Rainfall can also affect beach quality by carrying organic matter and sewage out to sea.

The Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo (Sabesp), responsible for basic sanitation in cities that have unsuitable beaches, reported that in the last three years, R$ 1.1 billion were invested to expand the sewage collection and treatment system. across the coast of São Paulo.

The company maintains the Onda Limpa program to improve sanitation, the environment and bathing on the beaches. According to Sabesp, Baixada Santista has 84% of sewage collection and 100% of sewage treatment, while on the North Coast, the rates are 74% and 100%, respectively.
