Christodoulidis: Our will is to further strengthen the cooperation with the Greek government

The armament program of the Republic of Cyprus will always continue as part of strengthening the deterrent power of the Republic of Cyprus announced on Friday (10/3) the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis.

In his statements to journalists, after his visit to the camp of the 33rd Commando Squadron, in Stavrovouni, the President of the Republic, in a journalist’s observation that the pillars of his priorities are the Cypriothealth, education and defence, said that “your observation about how my own visits are progressing is very correct, also sending a message about the stigma of our own governance”.

“First, however, let me mention that we are proud of our commandos, we are proud of the National Guard, of the valor of our National Guard, an effort that began many years ago, but I want to publicly acknowledge, because we are here for to recognize what happened. In recent years, very important work has been done, especially in the field of armament programs of the Republic of Cyprus always in the context of strengthening the deterrent power of the Republic of Cyprus” he noted.

“As long as there is an occupation in our homeland, we must strengthen our deterrent power”

“With my presence here today, I want to send the message that this effort that was made and recognized will be strengthened even more. The deterrent power of the Republic of Cyprus will be further strengthened. We are a country under occupation.

As long as there is an occupation in our homeland, we must strengthen our deterrent power. At the same time, however, we are a member state of the EU and we welcome the fact that in recent years the EU has taken bold steps in the pillar of defense and security by developing its own infrastructure in the specific sectors, and the Republic of Cyprus together with other states , it’s Greece, France, we will be at the core of this effort because we really believe that the EU should strengthen itself in this particular area,” the President of the Republic of Cyprus emphasized, as reported by the Athens News Agency.

“Besides, I was Secretary of State and I know that without a strong deterrent, without a strong defense, foreign policy discourse is clearly limited. The recent US decision to completely lift the US embargo is also particularly important, a decision that we will take advantage of, a decision that also reflects the level of our relations with the US, the role we are trying to play in the region.

You know very well that one of the main pillars of our cooperation with the states of the region, whether at a tripartite or multilateral level, is also based on the exercises that take place, it is also based on the defense and security sector. And always within the framework of strengthening the deterrent power of the Republic of Cyprus” added its President Cyprus.

Asked about the unified defense doctrine, the President of the Republic said that “if we all remember when the unified defense doctrine started, I have to say based on the information I have, both from the Minister of Defense and from the Chief of the National Guard that significant steps have been taken since then. Operationally, we are clearly in a better position than we were when the unified defense doctrine was first announced and for as long as it was implemented.

What I would like to mention is the clear political will on our part to further strengthen the cooperation that exists with the Greek government and not only that, but also with other states because there is cooperation such as with France, the neighboring states, there is this political will on our part and I think that the next important step we must take is to see these partnerships through the nexus of our participation in the EU as a member state, within the framework of European defense and security, which in recent years have taken the most important steps”.

The President of Cyprus was asked whether the implementation of the armament program will continue and he answered: it will continue. In our program it is recorded that 2% of the country’s GDP will be used for the equipment programs of the Republic of Cyprus always within the framework of strengthening the deterrent power of our country”.

When asked if agreements are expected to be made with other countries, the President of the Republic said that “in the field of defense, in the field of Security, the less that is said publicly, the more is done, without the need to give publicity every time. We should not in the field of defense in particular, all of us or any of us be swayed by nice public statements, communication approaches. Especially in the field of defense, what counts is the essence”.
