The director Christopher Nolan revealed, on Thursday (15), that he wants to do a Horror Movie but has not yet found an “exceptional” idea for the genre.
Christopher Nolan spoke about the subject during a talk at British Film Institute , In London. The director said more about his fascination with the genre, while answering a question from the audience who asked if he would make a horror film.
“'Oppenheimer' definitely contains horror elements, as I consider appropriate to the subject matter,” began Nolan.
“I think horror films are very interesting because they rely on a lot of cinematic devices, it's really about a visceral response to things and so, at some point, I would love to make a horror film”, revealed the director.
So, Nolan expressed that what's missing is a good idea that does justice to the magnitude of the genre.
“I think a really good horror movie requires a really exceptional idea. And those are few and far between. I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that yet,” he said.
The director continued to praise the genre. “But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematographic point of view. It's also one of the few genres where studios make a lot of these films, and they're films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have many of the qualities that Hollywood often resists putting into films, but this is a genre where that is allowed,” Nolan added.
At the same event, Christopher Nolan stated that the films in his “Batman” trilogy reflect the fear of terrorism and fascism that he felt while producing the films.
“The intention was always to be honest in presenting the things that we were affected by, things that worried us. Certainly, when I look at 'Batman Begins', there is a big emphasis on terrorism, obviously, after 9/11,” said Nolan, later saying that this inclusion was not conscious.
Nolan is competing for the Oscar for Best Director with “Oppenheimer”, which received 12 other nominations at the ceremony to be held in Los Angeles on March 10.
