Chrome will break all proxy extensions. Developers don’t have an API

In January 2023, Chrome will no longer support the Manifest V2 platform, which provides APIs for extensions, leaving only Manifest V3 compatibility. Google explains this by concern for the privacy of users and the security of their data. However, there are certain problems, one of which has recently made a splash on the Internet: existing ad blockers do not support Manifest V3 and will stop working with the new version of Chrome in 2023. Now it turned out that a similar problem applies to proxy extensions – it is even more serious.

In Manifest V3, some old APIs have been replaced with new ones with limited access – ad blocker developers will have to use less efficient technologies. The first popular extensions to release experimental versions specifically for Manifest V3 were Adguard and uBlock Origin. However, these developers at least have an alternative API, albeit less functional.

And the creators of proxy extensions have no alternative for onAuthREquired yet. This problem was highlighted by one of the users of the Chromium bug forum back in October 2020, but it has not yet been resolved. On September 20, 2022, one of the Chromium developers responded to it – he said that his team would try to resolve this issue until January 2023 (that is, before the termination of support for Manifest V2). However, it is not clear whether the creators of proxy extensions will have enough time to rebuild their utilities for the new (probably less functional) API.
