One of the stakes of the Greek-American community was its reconstruction church of Agios Nikolaos which was leveled under the ruins of the terrorist attack on Twin Towers in New York in 2001.
The design of the new church was undertaken by the architect Santiago Calatrava who followed the progress of the project and periodically posted photos of the reconstruction on his personal twitter account.
The goal was to complete the temple and hand it over to the public in time for the 20th anniversary of the attack, but this was not possible. After a temporary hiatus, work resumed in 2020.
“We are thrilled to announce the historic reopening of the new St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Temple, a structure emblematic of Lower Manhattan’s historic future and defining past,” the architect tweeted.
