Church roof collapses and leaves at least 11 dead in Mexico

At least 11 people died and two were seriously injured Sunday after the roof of a church in northern Mexico collapsed, authorities said.

30 people are believed to be buried in the rubble, Reuters reported. At least 60 people were injured, with two people suffering serious injuries, Tamaulipas state security spokesman said.

Preliminary reports indicate that around a hundred people were inside the building in Ciudad Madero at the time of the incident, according to a statement from the Tamaulipas security services.

Units from the National Guard, State Guard, Civil Protection and Red Cross help in the rescue operation.

Bishop José Armando Alvarez of the diocese of Tampico said the church’s roof collapsed while the faithful were taking communion, Reuters reported. He asked other community members to pray for the survivors.

“Right now, the necessary work is being carried out to remove the people who are still under the rubble,” said Dom Armando in a recorded message shared on social media, according to Reuters.
