Church, sexual abuse of nuns: the documentary

The Catholic Church has been hit by a profound crisis: it has been called to answer for a long and merciless series of sexual abuse against children and adolescents. And while, again, attempts are made to bring out the truths that have been silent for too long, a “new” phenomenon has emerged, which the Church had tried to cover up: in different parts of the world, nuns and religious were sexually abused by men of the Church of higher hierarchical levelsfrom priests to dignitaries, up to the Vatican.

Those who, after the violence, became pregnant, were threatened with expulsion from their own communities, or have been forced to have an abortion. Some have had the courage to denounce oppression by the clergy.

It is to them that the documentary “Sexual abuse of nuns: the other scandal in the Church”, by French directors Eric Quintin and Marie-Pierre Raimbault, available for free, with Italian subtitles, on the European cultural channel arte.tv (on the arte.tv/it website or on the ARTE apps for smart TV, Fire TV, Apple TV and mobile devices). It is intended to be a privileged look at a thorny issue that involves ecclesiastical institutions, and which has remained out of the spotlight to this day.

Although the allegations were made public and then investigated, the incidents reported by the nuns were often ignored, and the priests were acquitted by the Vatican court. But in the last twenty years the wall of silence has begun to crumble. In February 2019, Pope Francis finally admitted the existence of the abuses to the detriment of the nuns.

However, the investigation for the making of the documentary had begun three years earlier: documentary makers Eric Quintin and Marie-Pierre Raimbault looked for the nuns victims of sexual abuse in France, Italy, Germany, Canada and Africa. And they gave the floor to them, but also to superiors, priests and close collaborators of Pope Francis. To draw an overall picture of a scandal that still remains on the sidelines of the debate.
