CIA director returns to Cairo for more negotiations between Israel and Hamas

The director of the CIA, the American intelligence agency, Bill Burns, will return to Cairo this Tuesday (7) for further negotiations, he told CNN a source familiar with the meetings, as the United States and other mediators seek to revive an effort to reach an agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

The main negotiations in Cairo are organizational, and Burns is not expected to participate in them, but he will meet with the various delegations. Both Israel and Qatar said they would send teams.

A Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson described the latest round of talks in Cairo as “indirect talks between the two sides” as Israel is not expected to meet with Hamas officials.

Burns returned to Cairo late last week, before heading to Doha at the weekend for further talks on a potential Gaza ceasefire agreement. In Doha, he helped rework the framework that was then presented to Hamas and to which the group responded on Monday (6).

Israel said the terms of that proposal were “far from” meeting its demands and warned it would pursue a military operation in Gaza.
