Presenter Cid Moreira became one of the best known on Brazilian TV for being in charge of Jornal Nacional for 26 years. The announcer was also one of the first communicators in charge of the TV Globo periodical.

Born in Taubaté, São Paulo, on September 29, 1927, Cid Moreira was the son of Isauro Moreira and Elza Moreira. The journalist had two brothers: the announcer Célio Moreira, who died at the age of 89, in 2021, and Céia Moreira, who died at the age of 74, in a car accident, in 2003.
Unmistakable for his deep voice, Cid Moreira became an accountant at the age of 15, on Difusora de Taubaté radio, before migrating to Rádio Bandeirantes, in 1947. In the following years, the communicator stood out on other radio stations as a narrator until he became nationally known. Known for presenting Jornal Nacional for the first time, on TV Globo, in 1969.
When he left the news in 1996, he became the longest-serving anchor in charge of a newspaper in Brazil. William Bonner, however, surpassed his mark and has been presenting the Rio station’s main news program for 28 years.

Career
After starting his career at Difusora de Taubaté radio and moving to Bandeirantes, where he was hired as the official announcer for the campaign of one of the vehicle’s owners, Cid Moreira moved to Rádio Mayrink Veiga, where he worked for 12 years.
Prominent as a narrator, he was hired by TV Excelsior and narrated documentaries for the cinema, in addition to presenting the weekly newspaper Canal 100, produced by Carlos Niemeyer.
Among his work as a narrator, he acted in the film “Angu de Caroço”, from 1955, returning to be a narrator in 1958, in the feature film “Traficantes do Crime”. About a decade later, in 1969, he debuted presenting the first edition of the news program Jornal Nacional, alongside Hilton Gomes, on September 1 of that year.
In one of the best-known television news programs in the country, Cid Moreira was also in charge alongside Sérgio Chapelin, until March 29, 1996. In 2015, both returned for a special edition of the newspaper, in honor of TV Globo’s 50th anniversary.
The announcer and journalist also achieved success and national recognition by narrating excerpts from the Bible and selling more than 30 million CDs to religious audiences. Among the best-known recordings are “The Holy Bible — The New Testament” (2002), “New Testament Collection” (2004) and “The Holy Bible in full text” (2004 to 2009).
In the Fantástico vignette and the Rio broadcaster’s sports programs about the 2010 World Cup, Cid Moreira’s intonation and voice were also used. The catchphrase “Jabulaaani” referred to the name of the ball from the then competition, and to this day appears in video cuts of the sporting occasion.
At the age of 83, his biography was released and called “Good night: Cid Moreira, the great voice of communication in Brazil”, in reference to the phrase he said daily during his time at Jornal Nacional. By Fátima Sampaio Moreira, the book follows the journalist’s personal and professional life.
Personal life
One of the best-known and respected names in Brazilian journalism, Cid Moreira has established himself with a long career on radio and TV. In his personal life, however, the journalist faced some losses.
Cid Moreira had three children: Jaciara, Rodrigo and Roger. His only daughter is the result of the journalist’s first marriage, to Nelcy Moreira. The communicator’s heiress died in 2020, aged 50, a victim of pulmonary emphysema. Due to her addiction to cigarettes, she suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which makes breathing difficult.
Jaciara lost a son, Alexandre Moreira, who died at age 21 in a car accident in 1996.
Rodrigo Moreira is the result of Cid Moreira’s relationship with Olga Verônica Radenzev. The two got together in the early 1970s, and after the end of the marriage, father and son moved away.
Cid Moreira’s third son is adopted. Roger was the nephew of Ulhiana Naumtchyk, whom the communicator married in 1985 and remained with for 20 years. When announcing their separation in 2005, the couple reported that they had been separated for at least seven years. At the same time, Cid Moreira began dating Fátima Sampaio, with whom he maintained a romance until his death.
Breakup with children
Throughout his life, journalist Cid Moreira did not maintain a good relationship with either of his two children. Both even went to court on different occasions against their father. Rodrigo Moreira, for example, sued him for emotional abandonment in 2006, but lost the case. According to him, the journalist paid his pension until he was 18 years old, but he has not fulfilled his role as a father since he broke off his relationship with Olga Radenzev, when Rodrigo was just over 1 year old.
In 2021, he was responsible for initiating another legal process, asking for the interdiction of Cid Moreira and the arrest of Fátima Sampaio, alleging that she took advantage of the journalist’s fragility to take possession of his assets. The couple had a 36-year age difference.
The communicator, however, refuted the accusations. In October 2023, he said in an interview with R7: “So many stories of hatred, betrayal and disappointment between members of a family. So, like everything in this world, family can be our good and our bad.”
Roger Moreira also claimed in 2021 that he was disinherited by the communicator and that he began to have difficulties visiting him. He filed a lawsuit to meet Cid Moreira again and participated with his brother in the accusation process against Fátima.
