Cid Moreira posed upside down in the bathtub for the cover of a magazine; remember

In the early 1990s, while still sitting on the bench at Jornal Nacional, Cid Moreira posed upside down in his bathtub for the cover of Caras magazine, willing to show another side of the serious man who appeared in a suit on television every night.

The journalist died this Thursday morning (3), aged 97, due to kidney failure, in a hospital in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro.

The magazine’s 1993 headline reads: “The shy man behind Brazil’s best-known face shows his house, his wife and his legs.” The iconic click that captured Cid Moreira with his legs in the air while taking a bubble bath, however, happened almost by chance.

The journalist decided to take the photo while taking a bath, but the film in one of the cameras ran out during the session and Cid took advantage of the break to exercise his body — when he was caught by the photographer.

“I always liked exercising. So, I was in a photo shoot and I was getting tired”, he recalled in an interview with comedian Rafael Cortez’s channel, in 2020.

“The coil ran out and the helper said he had to get another one from the car. And I was waiting for the photo in the bathtub,” he said. “And then I slowly started exercising my abdomen, lifting [as pernas]and I forgot there was a photographer there. He hit [a foto] and won a prize.”

“The intention there was not to show your face”, joked Cid, laughing at the pun.
