Cinema and gastronomy: 4 movies and series for those who are hungry

Just as a hearty Sunday table surrounded by family and friends unites us, so does gastronomy in cinema and television. It’s no wonder that in addition to the various TV shows, series and movies with this theme always come to surprise us – and we love them. Really marathon and watch it again, as if it was the first time.

In recent weeks, four novelties have been released, one in Brazilian cinemas and another three on the streaming platform of Netflix. Very different from each other – but always surrounded by stories about the passion for cooking -, these tips are worth the hours in front of the screen.

“Mateína – The Lost Herb” – Cinemas

In a dystopian reality, in the year 2045, yerba mate is banned and can only be consumed in secret in Uruguay. One of the most consumed beverages in the country needs to be smuggled in this story, which is a co-production between Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil, playing in a few movie theaters in Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Brasília and Rio de Janeiro. The film shows how a simple herb can be the identity symbol of an entire nation, no matter the passage of time.

“From Queen of Vegan to Outlaw” – Neflix

On the wave of Netflix crooks stories like “Inventing Anna” and “The Tinder Scam”which were audience records, the platform now shows the trajectory of Sarma, one of the pioneers in vegan restaurants and raw food.

Opened in the early 2000s in New York, Pure Food and Wine was frequented by celebrities such as Gisele and Tom Brady, but became the target of one of the biggest scandals of the decade. Sarma, who was arrested, participates in the series with testimonies and says that she was tricked by a man who convinced her that she was commanded by beings from the beyond, and that if she followed him she would be immortalized and, of course, expand her empire.

“Is that a Cake?” – Netflix

Even kids fall in love with this culinary competition between America’s most experienced pastry chefs. The challenge is to create the cakes from real objects and even other foods – in one of the episodes, a hamburger becomes a cake with a colorful and delicious filling. The cakes must be so perfect as to deceive the judges. One of those TV shows that you look forward to watching until the end – and the best, without the suspenseful intervals of normal TV programming.

“The Black Eyes of Marilyn” – Netflix

Gastronomy serves as a backdrop to tell the story of Diego (Stefano Accorsi) and Clara (Miriam Leone), two patients undergoing psychiatric treatment. He, a chef preoccupied with perfection and having problems with his daughter; she, someone who seeks balance and meaning in life. An Italian production by Netflix, which mixes moments of drama and comedy about human behavior, and that makes you laugh and cry. The restaurant here brings them together on a journey of discovery.
