Circulation of the coronavirus to continue into 2022, says infectologist

The infectious disease physician at the Instituto Emílio Ribas Jamal Suleiman said this Saturday (1st), to CNN, that the circulation of the coronavirus should continue in Brazil in 2022. According to the expert, it is not possible to predict the impact of the variants, but it is possible to say that vaccination is the strategy that will protect people.

“We still have a variant that circulates with great intensity at this moment in the country, and fortunately for vaccinated people, mortality is low. This is to show the population that it is essential that they receive the vaccine, it is the only strategy we have to reduce mortality”, he said.

Suleiman stated that the impact of the variants on the pandemic situation is still something to be studied. Meanwhile, the infectologist stated that “we will have to live with the virus, but being more intelligent than it”.

The doctor defended the vaccination of children from five to 11 years old, and said that the measure is essential because “the virus has an affinity for humans in all age groups”. As with other infectious diseases, Suleiman believes that in the near future it will be necessary to vaccinate children from the moment they are born.

According to the infectologist, there is no other way than vaccination and the requirement of proof of vaccination is an effective measure to preserve the life of the population. The doctor said the low number of deaths from Covid-19 in December is indicative of the importance of vaccination.

Suleiman also criticized the inequality in the distribution of immunizations against Covid-19 around the world: “Either we protect everyone, or we will not be protected”. “In this sense, it is important for us to contribute by supplying people all over the planet”, he concluded.
