The special traffic scheme for Rio de Janeiro, set up by the Capital’s Traffic Engineering Company (CET-Rio) has already started this Thursday (30). The entry of charter buses in the city is already prohibited. There are three blocking points: at Baixada Fluminense, in Irajá, in the North Zone of Rio, and at the exit of Rio-Santos (BR-101), in Santa Cruz, North Zone.
The city’s objective is to make access difficult for a very large public during the New Year. The capital will have fireworks at 10 different points throughout the city, including Copacabana beach, a place known worldwide for the end-of-the-year party. Neighborhoods like Barra da Tijuca, Recreio, in the West Zone, and Flamengo, in the South Zone, will also have fireworks shows. In addition, 25 sound towers will be built on the edge of Copacabana, which will not have stages for live shows to avoid greater crowds.
Of the 26 capitals of the country and the Federal District, only Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Boa Vista (Roraima) will have a New Year’s Eve party, promoted by city halls.
All over Rio, CET-Rio will work with 130 men, 23 motorcycles and 20 operational vehicles, which will work to maintain the fluidity of traffic, curb irregular parking, organize intersections, guide pedestrians and carry out the necessary roadblocks. Twelve variable message boards will also be used that will inform about changes in traffic.
On the morning of the 31st, Avenida Atlântica, in Copacabana, will have the waterfront blocked off from 7 am. At 15, the avenue will be completely closed. From 6 pm, parking in the region is prohibited, with 1,900 fewer spaces, and at 7 pm, only those who present proof of residence, work or accommodation will have access to the area. Public transport will be stopped in Copacabana from 8:00 pm onwards, and the total opening starts at 10:00 pm.
The city hall authorized the operation of kiosks along the Rio de Janeiro coast. The only restriction will be the ban on enclosures that can close off public space.
In addition to Copacabana, the Aterro do Flamengo will also have a ban on cars, as is already done on Sundays, from 10 pm onwards. CET-Rio recommends that the areas of Copacabana, Ipanema, Lagoa and Botafogo be avoided by drivers.
