Cities’ GDPs are at risk from loss of nature, says World Forum study

The World Economic Forum and other entities warn, in a report, that almost half of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of cities is at risk, in the face of natural losses.

The survey points to the important role of municipalities in unlocking economic opportunities, with a view to nature-based solutions.

The report says that 44% of GDP in cities around the world, or $31 trillion, is at risk of shock from the loss of nature.

The study was carried out in collaboration with the Alexander von Humboldt Institute, the government of Colombia, and the Forum’s BiodiverCities by 2030 Initiative, with the intention of analyzing the framework and suggesting solutions.

In a statement, the Forum advocates the adoption of guidelines to help cities adopt nature-based solutions for urban infrastructure in order to optimize spending and drive sustainable growth.
