According to a survey by the Agency CNNthree of the cities most affected by heavy rains that hit São Paulo a few weeks ago – Franco da Rocha, Embu das Artes and Várzea Paulista – have not received funding from the federal government so far.
Together, the three municipalities in the Metropolitan Region account for 26 of the 34 deaths resulting from the storms recorded in the state. In Franco da Rocha alone, 18 deaths were recorded.
By means of a note, the Ministry of Regional Development stated that the first requirement for the release of the funds is the federal recognition of a state of emergency.
According to the ministry, the municipalities of Capivari, Campo Limpo Paulista, Monte Mor, Caieiras, Mombuca, Santa Isabel, Várzea Paulista, Jaú and Flora Rica received the recognition. However, according to the ministry, none of the nine municipalities requested resources through the official platform.
The city hall of Franco da Rocha announced that it is preparing the documents to send to the ministry. The municipality of Várzea Paulista claimed to have requested funding for recovery before the recognition of an emergency situation, granted on the 14th. Embu das Artes claims to have sent all the necessary requirements and forms.
In addition to these conversations, the Public Ministry of the State of São Paulo opened an investigation to investigate whether the tragedy could have been avoided and whether there are those responsible.
