Despite the numerous difficulties faced by the Brazilian educational system, several initiatives around the country have acted to change the course of basic education and ensure quality for students.
In the first episode of the special series produced by CNN“Projeto Educação Que Dá Certo”, we know the successful strategies adopted by the public network of Teresina – the capital with the best Basic Education Development Index (Ideb) in the country.
Educator Priscila Cruz, from the NGO Todos Pela Educação, visited the municipality in Piauí. Although it has one of the worst rankings in GDP per capita (23rd position), Teresina has a strong education network. With a population of 870 thousand inhabitants, there are more than 300 schools in the city.
In the Ideb of the final years of elementary school, Teresina has an index of 6.3 – the best among Brazilian capitals and far ahead of the richest cities in the country, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, which occupy the 9th and 10th position, respectively. .
First, we follow this development in the classroom. See if what the teachers are teaching is within what was passed on in the training; if the students are learning, they are able to learn what is being taught and, on top of that, we carry out the assessments, the simulations every 15 days and check if this learning is really happening.

According to the Executive Secretary of Education, Kleyton dos Santos, the evaluation system is rigorous. The results are collected and generate a graphic statement that is returned to the schools to carry out the analyses.
To turn the gears of education, however, there is still a fundamental piece missing: teachers.
In Teresina, the Municipal Department of Education maintains the Teacher Training Center. It is in this space that professionals can share knowledge and skills that they take to the classrooms.
The result, however, does not appear in the short term. There are years and years of public management investing in educational policies.
“We, as secretaries of education, have been succeeding each other within a line of continuity of educational policy focused on the student”, said the former municipal secretary of education, Washington Bonfim.
Motivated, students not only enjoy a quality education system, but also return in prizes and medals won by a network of efforts.
“When I started to win a medal, to make an effort, and I saw that my effort was paying off, it was surprising”, said student Maria Eduarda.
