City Hall of Rio de Janeiro announces special scheme for New Year’s Eve in Copacabana

After two years of restrictions, the City of Rio de Janeiro released, this Monday (26), the operating scheme for New Year’s Eve 2023.

Rio resumes the full party, with two stages in Copacabana, in the South Zone, with concerts by Zeca Pagodinho, Iza, Mart’nália, Preta Gil, Gilsons and Alexandre Pires, in addition to nine other celebration points spread throughout the city.

On December 31st, the blockades in Copacabana and Leme begin at 7 am, with the banning of the Avenida Atlântica runway next to the waterfront, as is the case on weekends and holidays. At 4pm, it will be completely closed in both directions. At 7:30 pm, all accesses to the neighborhood will be closed, with the exception of buses and taxis that will be able to access Copacabana until 10 pm.

Parking will be prohibited along the entire length of Avenida Atlântica and on its access and exit routes from 6 pm on Friday (30).

As of 5:00 am on the 1st, access to Copacabana will be free for all vehicles. However, Avenida Atlântica, on both lanes, will remain closed. From 10:00 am, the lane next to the buildings on Avenida Atlântica will be open and will operate with the hand reversed, as it happens on Sundays and holidays.

“Rio de Janeiro’s New Year’s Eve is the biggest on the planet and this year will be no different. We have some innovations, a lot of technology and, in addition to Copacabana, we will be spread across the city, democratizing the party. After two years without people being able to socialize on this date, we are back, with a New Year’s Eve with a sustainability concept. Last year it was just a firework display, but now people will be able to go back to celebrating and hugging each other at this great party in the world”, said the president of Riotur, Ronnie Costa.

The biggest New Year’s Eve in the world will have an unprecedented firework display, with more modern and technological bombs. On arrival in 2023, at midnight, the sky in Copacabana will light up with a 12-minute fireworks show. In total, there will be ten rafts, with a distance of 25 meters between them. The firing system is connected via GPS, which monitors and activates each one of them.

Also new are the search with metal detectors and the installation of 30 observation towers with light cannons. There will be 15 structures on the boardwalk and 15 on the sand strip, close to the water. The objective is to prevent the entry of knives and firearms and to avoid thefts and robberies during the party.

In addition to Copacabana, celebrations for the arrival of 2023 will be held at nine other points in the city: Flamengo, Ilha do Governador, Madureira, Paquetá, Guaratiba, Penha, Ramos, Sepetiba and Barra da Tijuca.

Réveillon 2023 is organized by 30 public bodies. According to the City Hall, there will be 195 professionals from CET-Rio to coordinate traffic on the streets and around 1,500 agents and municipal guards to organize actions and support traffic. The festivities will count on more than 4 thousand street sweepers. In Copacabana there will be four medical stations and around 30 ambulances for assistance.
