City Hall Study: Remove families from Jd. Pantanal can cost $ 1.9 billion

The City of São Paulo studies alternatives that solve flooding that impact the lives of residents of Jardim Pantanal, region below the level of the Tietê River, in the east of the capital.

With an estimated cost of R $ 1.9 billion, one of the possibilities would focus on removals and expropriations in the Pantanal Garden, resettlements, construction of new housing estates and the creation of an floodplain.

The purpose of the study would be to recover the region and return the floodplain area of the Tietê River, as well as environmental recovery.

Other alternatives point to macrodrainage. The construction of a dike, seven reservoirs, the Várzeas do Tietê park and a 5.5 km channel, resetting the 484 families.

The goal would be to “divert rainwater to avoid flooding, protect adjacent areas of erosion or water damage, improve drainage and reduce the risk of landslides or erosion in inclined areas,” according to City Hall and would have an estimated cost in about R $ 1.02 billion.

Still focusing on macrodrainage, another assumption would be the construction of a channel, the opening of water accumulation lagoons, reversal of the Tietê river flow of water, temporarily, as well as expropriations, removal and resettlement.

This action would be intercity cooperation, between the municipalities of São Paulo and Guarulhos, for flood control, and would have an investment of approximately R $ 1 billion.

“Due to costs, alternatives may include a combination of these possibilities. In this case, the values can be refurbished as the operation is performed in the region, ”said the city in a statement.

The mayor of Sao Paulo, Ricardo Nunes, said he studies paying between $ 20,000 and $ 50,000 for families to leave the region.
