The city halls of the 66 cities in Rio de Janeiro served by Enel met this Monday (27) and decided to file a Public Civil Action with the Rio Court of Justice against the energy concessionaire. In the process, municipalities ask for the restoration of light supply within 4 hours in places still without electricity and the creation of a contingency plan for future power outages.
A storm hit several cities in the metropolitan and interior regions of Rio de Janeiro during the extended Black Awareness Day holiday, on November 20th. Among the problems caused by the rain, several municipalities had their electricity supply interrupted and the situation persisted for days. Eight days after the heavy rain there are areas that have not yet completely returned to normal.
At the meeting, mayors and municipal representatives discussed the company’s service provision and the future of the concession. The group wrote a letter to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) and the Ministry of Mines and Energy asking for the concessions to be rethought.
In a post on social media, the mayor of Niterói, Axel Grael (PDT), who articulated the meeting, defended that cities can give their opinion on the continuity of contracts such as the one signed by Enel “it is extremely important that municipalities actively participate in this process”.
The municipalities also demand in court that the concessionaire draw up a contingency plan for the summer.
“We are experiencing the worst rains and climate change. And this cannot be an excuse for a company that did not plan, that did not do its homework.”, according to the mayor of Areal, Gutinho Bernardes (Rede).
A CNN contacted Enel and is awaiting the concessionaire’s position.
