City in the interior of Amazonas declares emergency due to drought

The city of Tefé, in the interior of Amazonas, decreed drought emergency this Thursday (15). The document will be evaluated by the State Civil Defense and by the agency at the national level, to obtain recognition of public risk and receive resources to face the drought. Since July, the government of Amazonas has recognized 20 Amazonian municipalities in drought emergency .

The State Civil Defense is still evaluating the request for emergency recognition for Uarini (AM), also in the interior of the state. Among the impacts of the drought that concern authorities are the risk of shortage of drinking water, health supplies and medicines .

The Tefé (AM) decree highlights that the low or no rain in the headwaters of the rivers and tributaries that flow through the city is causing “serious hydrological imbalance” in certain regions of the municipality and drought in urban and rural areas. The Municipal Civil Defense states that there is a risk of isolation of communities high number of people affected and human and material damage. Drought can also cause environmental damage, in addition to the economic impacts of the loss of crops and livestock.

“There is a need to adopt immediate measures capable of minimizing losses and damages, and avoid compromising the safety of property and the population living in the affected areas,” the document states. The decree also authorizes the mobilization of all municipal bodies to deal with the drought and the call for volunteers to reinforce the actions.

The city also established a Drought Crisis Management Committee to address the drought and adopt and establish environmental protection measures necessary to prevent and control fires.

Throughout Brazil, 404 cities are in extreme drought conditions according to the Integrated Drought Index (IIS) — number four times bigger than in June and 40 times bigger than that recorded in the same period last year, when only 10 municipalities were classified in this way.

Most of the areas are located in the North and Central-West regions. The forecast is for a jump from 404 to 461 municipalities in extreme drought in August
