City is isolated due to heavy rains in Rio Grande do Sul

The city of Candelária, in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is islanded and completely isolated after being underwater during strong storms in the region. The mayor of the municipality, Nestor Ellwanger Rim (PSB), spoke to CNN this Thursday (2) by phone, as the internet signal is unstable there.

“Our city has been in existence for 99 years, it is the biggest flood in the history of Candelária. We do not have access to Porto Alegre, we do not have access to our neighbors, which are Santa Cruz do Sul and Vera Cruz. We don’t have access to the Santa Maria region”, he says.

This Thursday morning, ten people were transferred by a state helicopter to the city of Santa Cruz, to undergo hemodialysis treatment. “We usually take these people by van, but the RSC-287 highway has been closed for three days. We set up a house for the patients in Santa Cruz and a van will take them to hemodialysis”, explains Nestor.

“We have two helicopters from the Santa Maria air base to carry out rescues, there are places we cannot reach with boats, the water is very high and the current is very strong”, said the mayor.

The chief executive also questions the delay in transferring funds. “The money that the government distributed is not enough to do things, it should be done faster. I hope the Federal Government releases these resources more quickly to the cities of Rio Grande do Sul. People are in a hurry, they have to build a house, buy furniture…”.
