City of Rio de Janeiro ends flu vaccination

The City Hall of Rio de Janeiro confirmed to the CNN, on Monday (3), that the flu vaccination campaign ended in the city.

According to the municipal health secretary, Daniel Soranz, a new application of the immunizing agent is expected to start in April. The date is already referring to the schedule of immunizations in the city’s public network in 2022.

Soranz also stated that, at the moment, the disease situation is more under control in Rio. “The flu cases are 73% lower. We are out of the flu outbreak. Now, only with the composition of the new 2022 vaccine [haverá nova aplicação de imunizantes]”, he guaranteed.

In a statement, the municipal administration informed that the last shipment of vaccines delivered to the city hall arrived on December 10, with the last doses being applied this Monday morning.

Since the beginning of the municipal vaccination campaign, according to the city hall, more than 2.9 million doses have been applied.

From November to December 2021, the capital of Rio de Janeiro registered 106 deaths caused by Influenza A, according to the city’s Health information systems.

In recent weeks, Rio de Janeiro has experienced an epidemic of Influenza A. In December, health authorities in the capital of Rio de Janeiro announced the outbreak in the city. At the time of the announcement, there were 23 thousand registered cases of the disease.

However, according to the city of Rio, the number of patients who sought assistance in the urgency and emergency network in the last week was 75% lower compared to the beginning of December.

Two other municipalities in the Metropolitan Region, São João de Meriti and Japeri, also declared an influenza epidemic last month. The State of Rio began vaccinating the citizens of Rio de Janeiro in all cities on April 13, 2021.
