City of Rio de Janeiro has 76% vaccine coverage against BCG in 2021

In 2021, the city of Rio de Janeiro reached 76% vaccination coverage against severe forms of tuberculosis. The BCG vaccine, which had coverage above the target of 90%, has shown a significant drop since 2019. The data are from the Municipal Health Department of the state capital.

The same happened with the immunizing agent against poliomyelitis. Last year, vaccination coverage was 71%. Even so, the vaccine that prevents infantile paralysis was the second in absolute number of applications, with more than 172 thousand doses in the state capital. Second only to Tetra/Pentavalent, which protects against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and the bacteria Haemophilus influenzae type b, and exceeded 175 thousand doses administered.

To update the vaccination schedule for children and adolescents, a multi-vaccination campaign began on Monday (8). The city hall will offer the vaccine against poliomyelitis for children from one to four years old and make available all the other immunizers to complement the vaccination schedule for the public from 0 to 14 years old.

In total, 18 vaccines will be available: BCG, hepatitis B, Pentavalent (DTP/Hib/HB), inactivated polio, oral polio, rotavirus, Pneumococcal 10 valent (Conjugate), Meningococcal C (Conjugate), yellow fever, MMR, chickenpox , DTP, hepatitis A, diphtheria and tetanus, Meningococcal ACWY (Conjugate), quadrivalent HPV, influenza and Covid-19.

The objective of the action is to reduce the risk of transmission of diseases that can be prevented by vaccines. It is estimated that more than one million children and adolescents from 0 to 14 years old are able to update the booklet, and of this total, about 280,000 children should receive the dose against poliomyelitis.

The recommendation is for parents and guardians to take to the posts, until September 9, the vaccination booklet of the child and adolescent or some other proof of the vaccination status, so that they can be evaluated by the health teams and any doses that do not have made at the time indicated can be applied.
