City of Rio de Janeiro receives 100,000 doses of flu vaccine

Five days after suspending the flu vaccination due to lack of immunization agents, the city of Rio de Janeiro received, this Wednesday (8), 100,000 doses of the vaccine against Influenza A H3N2.

The immunizers were sent by the Ministry of Health to the capital of Rio de Janeiro, which has been experiencing an outbreak of flu in recent weeks.

According to the Rio de Janeiro State Health Department, which will remove the vaccines in the next few hours, the doses are at the General Storage Coordination (CGA), in Niterói, in the Metropolitan Region. With this, the vaccination, which has been suspended since last Friday (3), will resume this Thursday (9).

Also on Wednesday, the Butantan Institute announced the donation of 400,000 doses of the flu vaccine to Rio de Janeiro. The statement was made by the governor of the state of São Paulo João Doria (PSDB), through social networks. “The effort is aimed at alleviating the outbreak of the disease that affects the population of Rio de Janeiro,” said Doria.

According to the Health Department of Rio de Janeiro, around 21 thousand people were diagnosed with flu-like illnesses in the last three weeks. During an interview given this Tuesday (7) to CNN, the municipal secretary of the ministry, Daniel Soranz, stated that since the beginning of the flu vaccination campaign, in April, more than 2.2 million people have been vaccinated in the city, and that efforts continue to expand the number of immunized.

To cope with the increase in demand for medical care, the state government installed tents next to health units in the capital, in different neighborhoods. “All service units are serving with overload. Tomorrow [quarta-feira], we are inaugurating another Influenza A service center. The forecast is to inaugurate five more city halls, of Influenza A, to service the flu,” added Soranz.

In addition to Rio de Janeiro, at least 11 other capitals in the country and the Federal District registered an increase in cases of flu-like illnesses in recent weeks, according to the latest Infogripe Bulletin, released by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, last week.
