City of Rio de Janeiro records second death from dengue this year

The Municipal Health Secretary (SMS) of Rio de Janeiro confirmed the second death from Dengue, in 2024, this Wednesday (14). According to the ministry, two other deaths from the disease are under investigation.

The victim was a 23-year-old man, who had no pre-existing illnesses, and presented symptoms such as muscle pain, pain in the joints, and pain behind the eyes, as well as fever and nausea.

His clinical condition evolved after 3 days, presenting a sensation of loss of muscle strength, spontaneous mucosal bleeding, dehydration, drop in platelets and intense abdominal pain.

The first death from the disease in the municipality occurred at the beginning of this month. The victim was a 45-year-old man, who was treated at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Maré.

On the 5th, a public health emergency was declared in the Official Gazette by the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (MDB), due to the dengue epidemic affecting the city.

This year alone, according to data from the Rio de Janeiro city council's Epidemiological Observatory panel, the city recorded 20,664 cases of dengue.
