City of Rio suspends 1st dose for children aged 3 and 4 years due to lack of Coronavac

Children aged three and four who have not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19 in Rio de Janeiro will have to wait a little longer. The lack of Coronavac in stock made the Municipal Health Department interrupt application of the first dose for this audience, since the immunizer is the only one released by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) in this age group. The stoppage is valid from this Tuesday (9).

The application of the second dose, however, scheduled to start on August 13, is guaranteed with immunizers that were reserved by the folder.

According to the secretariat, the request for new contributions of Coronavac was sent to the Ministry of Health last month but so far there has been no response. The folder also said that it asked the federal government for a position on the lack of doses, questioning whether it also happens in other states and whether there is a forecast of new shipments.

Since children aged three and four began to be immunized on July 15, just over 39,000 have received their first dose against Covid-19 in the state capital. The doses of Coronavac used so far in the campaign were already in stock in the municipality. More than 122,000 are still missing, according to the city hall panel that monitors the disease.

THE CNN contacted the Ministry of Health about the lack of doses and whether there is a forecast of delivery to Rio. The placement will be included in the text as soon as it is submitted.
