City of SP waves to release masks in open places, but awaits state decision

In an interview with CNN, the mayor of São Paulo Ricardo Nunes (MDB) said that it is now possible to release the use of masks in open places in the capital of São Paulo. According to him, the city hall delivered a study on the subject to the deputy governor of the state, Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB).

Nunes says that the epidemiological scenario points to the possibility of removing the mandatory face protection in open environments, such as streets, parks and the race track. He highlights the widespread vaccination, with 100% of adults and 80% of children immunized, combined with the decrease in the occupancy of beds in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) as indicators that allow flexibility.

“With the release by the state, we will follow up on the decision, because our epidemiological study says it is appropriate. The city of São Paulo already understands that there is no longer a need to oblige the use of masks in open places. The state government eventually announcing this tomorrow, the capital city government will follow up on the decision,” he said.

Vaccine passport

The requirement for a vaccination passport in the municipality is under discussion by the city hall team. “We should have an answer by Friday [11] we will continue to demand vaccine passport. At first, you wouldn’t even need to, because everyone is vaccinated. We are seeing issues that involve someone who comes from outside the state or the country,” Nunes said.

According to Nunes, the team evaluates withdrawing the mandatory vaccine passport following the advance of vaccination.

“We are suggesting putting a relationship between this and vaccination, as we reach 80% or 90% of coverage with a booster dose, vaccination of 100% of children, in short […] Everything is linked to the advancement of vaccination.”
