Teams from the Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo and the Technological Research Institute (IPT) carried out this Wednesday (24) an inspection of the almost 300 meter long crater that appeared in the city of Lupércio, approximately 415 km from the capital paulista.
A survey is being carried out to verify the need for the city hall to expropriate properties around the crater, which has been increasing in size and causing concern among the population.
Watch the inspection video:
According to the city hall, the erosion is 15 meters deep and 25 meters wide, having appeared in 2007. Even though it has been a problem for almost 17 years, the CNN found that the city only notified the state in February 2024, when erosion began to expand again.
Technically called a gully, the crater is located on private property in the rural area of the municipality. The city hall says it has already requested rural expropriation of the land, but is awaiting judicial authorization.
As it is private land, Civil Defense cannot carry out work on the site before obtaining judicial authorization.
Colonel Henguel Pereira, chief secretary of the Military House and State Coordinator of Protection and Civil Defense, highlighted the urgency of regularizing the area so that the government can begin the necessary interventions. “The government of São Paulo was in favor of actions coordinated by the Civil Defense as long as there is legal security to act”, says the organization.
