The Roraima Civil Police requested support from the Brazilian Army to rescue the bodies of three miners who were killed in an area of the Yanomami reserve, in the Parima mining area, region of the municipality of Iracema, on February 8.
According to investigations, conducted by the Alto Alegre Police Station, the deaths occurred after an alleged indigenous attack that took place around 3 pm, in the mining area between the localities of Parima and Dicão. The victims were identified as Josafá Vaniz da Silva, aged 52, Luiz Ferreira da Silva, aged 50, and Elizangela Pessoa da Silva, aged 43.
The interim general delegate of PCRR, Darlinda Viana, said that the Civil Police only became aware of the case on Monday (12), when the miners' families registered a police report. “On the same day we began negotiations with the Army, in Boa Vista. The following morning, we formalized a letter to the CMA and are awaiting a response so that the State security teams can go to the region”, explained the general delegate.
On Thursday (15), family members of the three victims met with the general delegate and the director of the Interior Judiciary Police Department (DPJI), Cândida Magalhães, to find out about the logistics of rescuing the bodies, considering that the area where the bodies are located is remote and difficult to access.
“We are coordinating the logistics so that we can go to the region. As we clarified, this is a region that presents logistical challenges for rescue teams. But the Government, through the Civil Police, is committed to overcoming these adversities and ensuring that the bodies are recovered with dignity and respect for the bereaved families”, said Darlinda.
In a statement, the Civil Police reported that, on Friday (16), it delivered the physical document to the Amazon Military Command.
A CNN contacted the Army, but received no response.
