Civil Police investigate abandonment of incapable against “A Mulher da Casa Abandonada”

The Civil Police of São Paulo opened a police investigation this Tuesday (5th) to investigate whether Margarida Bonetti, portrayed in the “Folha de S. Paulo” podcast “A Mulher da Casa Abandonada”, by Chico Felitti, was abandoned by the police. family.

According to the investigation, neighbors living in the Higienópolis neighborhood, in the capital of São Paulo, called the police reporting that “there was a person there who has mental health problems, and who would be in need of help”. Upon attending to the occurrence, the authorities identified that the residence was closed, in a state of abandonment and covered by vegetation, but that no one was received.

Residents also reported that Margarida used to be visited by her sister, who left food at the place. The Police summoned Margarida’s sister and son to testify, which should happen this week, according to the delegate in charge, Roberto Monteiro, from the 1st Sectional of the Center. Neighbors will also be summoned to testify about her routine, since, according to reports, she threw excrement out of the window in her own backyard, and collected the neighborhood garbage, taking it home.

“It seems that she may have some psychic disorder, because she lives in a house without water, without sewage, without electricity, without going out shopping,” said the delegate.

The woman could still answer for “exposure to danger” (exposing the life or health of another to direct and imminent danger; article 132 of the penal code) for the accumulation of garbage in the backyard, which generated an incidence of rats. There is no prison sentence for this crime, but there is a possibility of imprisonment from three months to a year.

Margarida, according to the journalistic podcast that told her story, was tried in the United States in 2000, along with her husband, Renê Bonetti, on an accusation of having kept their maid in conditions analogous to slavery and as an illegal immigrant in the country. He, having been a naturalized American, was imprisoned while she returned to Brazil.

According to the Brazilian Police, there is no longer any warrant against her, as the investigation is no longer active, so she could no longer be detained for this crime.

Also this week, the City of São Paulo carried out, on Monday (4), an inspection of the property on Rua Piauí, where it was found that there was garbage and construction materials on the outside of the house. Therefore, the owner was notified and summoned to carry out the maintenance of the place within a period of up to 60 days, under penalty of new assessments.

Instituto Luisa Mell and Deputy Delegate Bruno Lima arrived at the residence on Sunday (3), after receiving reports of animal abandonment.

Two dogs were found “in a deplorable situation” and were rescued by the Institute for care.
