A shootout in the upscale neighborhood of Jardins, in São Paulo, resulted in the death of three people, including a Civil Police investigator, on Saturday night (16). Milene Bagalho Estevam, 39 years old, was the victim of murder after going to a residence, with another police officer, to investigate a robbery that had occurred the previous day.
The owner of the house – a 56-year-old businessman with a criminal history of homicide, bodily harm and environmental crime – and a security guard at the residence also died, after exchanging gunfire with the police.
According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the police officer went to a residence in search of security camera images for the investigation. The owner reacted violently and shot the police officer, who was hit by the gunfire. The investigator’s colleague intervened, shooting the businessman.
However, a security guard at the house picked up one of the weapons on the floor and also shot at the police, before being killed.
Rescue was called, but both the police officer and the businessman succumbed to their injuries and died in hospital. The third person involved died at the scene of the confrontation. The SSP did not disclose the name or information about the businessman and the security guard.
According to the police, four weapons were seized, two belonging to the civil police officers and two to the businessman.
Furthermore, during the search of the residence, quantities of drugs were found.
The case is being investigated by the Homicide Division of the DHPP (Department of Homicide and Personal Protection) and was registered as a homicide and death resulting from police intervention.
In a statement, the Civil Police said that Milene Bagalho Estevam died while carrying out her duties. “She was 39 years old and had been at the institution for 7 years. She leaves behind a 5-year-old daughter. The Civil Police offers the most sincere feelings of solidarity to the family and friends”, says the note.
