No agreement in the war between Hamas and Israel and an ultimatum that put an end to possible negotiations. The Israeli War Cabinet unanimously approved the Rafah operation, for which the army has prepared the plans. Once the population has been evacuated, a situation which Israel defines as limited and temporary, the military operation should begin within a few days.
Tens of thousands of people took to the streets after the distribution of the expulsion plan. They are mostly women and children. Palestinian families have begun fleeing eastern areas of Rafah, the southern city on the border with Egypt where more than a million already displaced Gaza residents have taken refuge.
UNICEF says a military siege and incursion into Rafah would pose catastrophic risks to the 600,000 children who have taken refuge here. Approximately 65,000 children have a pre-existing disability, approximately 78,000 children are under 2 years old and at least 8,000 of these suffer from acute malnutrition. 9 out of 10 children under 5 have been affected by one or more infectious diseases. According to Unicef, almost half of children need psychological and social support.
UNRWA, the main UN relief agency for Palestinians, will not leave eastern Rafah. It will maintain a presence in Rafah for as long as possible and continue to provide life-saving aid to people. «Until now, the Rafah Land crossing has not been closed to passenger traffic. The movement of trucks and the entry of aid have been blocked at the Rafah trade crossings and Kerem Shalom since yesterday afternoon,” said Wael Abu Omar, UNRWA media director at the Rafah crossing.
It is a photo that has gone around the world, the one awarded in 2024 and tells what is happening in Gaza, but also how the war strikes indiscriminately
Axios journalist Barak Ravid, citing a source from the Palestinian militant group, said that «Israel and Hamas were close to reaching an agreement on a truce in Gaza and the release of hostages but the Israeli army's decision to begin the evacuation of Palestinian civilians from East Rafah will lead to the suspension of the talks». On the other hand, Israeli sources say that if Hamas accepts an agreement, preparations for the attack on Rafah could be stopped.
However, the Israeli government always says it is against putting an end to the conflict and a prolonged ceasefire. President Netanyahu does not change his position despite the ever-strong protests of the families of the kidnapped. The United States would like to keep the negotiation alive, but has also blocked the first supply of weapons to Israel from October 7th to today. The Israeli government has decided to close down Al Jazeera's activities because it defines it as harmful to Israel. There has been criticism from the UN and the Foreign Press Association.
