Classes are suspended after operation that left 13 dead in Rio de Janeiro

The municipality of São Gonçalo, in the Metropolitan Region of Rio, decided to suspend classes at Complexo do Salgueiro, after the operation that left 13 people dead and 3 injured, last Thursday (23).

According to the Secretary of Education of São Gonçalo, the measure affects about 1200 students from 8 schools.

Among the dead is Leonardo Costa Araújo, 37, known as Leo 41, who headed drug trafficking in the state of Pará. According to the police, he ordered the death of 40 security agents in the north of the country and was trying to expand his activities to Rio de Janeiro, in partnership with the largest criminal faction in the state.

The action, carried out by the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, had the support of the Police of Pará and Sergipe, in addition to the Military Police.

During the operation, three people were shot, including two residents of the community, who were taken to the Alberto Torres State Hospital and are not at risk of death.

According to the Civil Police, drugs, ammunition and weapons were seized, including 13 rifles.

On his social networks, Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) commented on the police action: “Two bandits who headed criminal factions in Sergipe and Pará were captured today by our state security forces. Thanks to the integrated work and intelligence of the Civil and Military Police, the criminals were located in Maré and São Gonçalo”.

Operation is among the ten most lethal in Rio de Janeiro

According to the Grupo de Estudos dos Novos Ilegalismos (GENI/UFF), the operation that resulted in 13 deaths, in Complexo do Salgueiro, is among the ten most lethal in Rio de Janeiro since 1994.

According to the survey, the action is the one with the highest number of deaths in 2023.

At the top of the list of the most lethal operations in Rio de Janeiro is the action in Jacarezinho, in the North Zone of the capital, when 28 people were killed in May 2021.
