The goalless draw between Flamengo and Botafogo for the ninth round of the Brazilian Championship, on Sunday night (18), was marked by scenes of violence and confusion on the outskirts of the MaracanĂ£ stadium, in the North Zone of Rio. In all, 102 fans were arrested for involvement in fights and riots before and after the classic.
According to the Military Police, the detainees would be members of organized fans. They were caught starting a confrontation on Arthur Menezes and SĂ£o Francisco Xavier streets, near the stadium.
During the approach, agents seized dangerous materials such as explosives, stones, bottles and even punches. Everyone involved were taken on a bus from the Specialized Stadium Policing Battalion (BEPE) to the Special Court of the fan and major events.
The afternoon was also marked by tension in another point of the city. At Engenho de Dentro’s train station, also in the North Zone, a confusion scared passengers and fans who went to the game.
According to the PM, agents of the escort force caught flamenco players launching fireworks against other fans and police who were on the platform. The images of the moment, released on social networks, show people running through the turmoil, trying to protect themselves.
To contain violence, police used less offensive equipment, including pepper sprays.
Supervia, the concessionaire responsible for the urban trains of Rio, said that around 14h, had to trigger the security forces to contain the exalted spirits at the station. Despite the episode, the circulation of trains normally followed.
