Cláudia Costin: Lack of resources and good management for education in Brazil

The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Cármen Lúcia ordered the opening of an inquiry against the Minister of Education, Milton Ribeiro, after a complaint of alleged favoring of pastors in the distribution of funds from the Ministry of Education. THE CNN Specialist in education, Cláudia Costin, talks about the problems that the country faces in the distribution of educational resources.

For Costin, there is a myth in Brazil that too much is spent on education while investment should be directed towards managing these resources. “That’s not true, both resources and good management are lacking here.”

The expert points out that Brazil spends less than half on basic education than the member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) spend on basic education. “In addition, of course, we need better management mechanisms, which even prevent corruption,” she says.

Costin recalls when the prime minister of Education in the Jair Bolsonaro government waged a war against universities, claiming that they were places of drug consumption and indoctrination. She also regrets the dismantling of Inep, the institute responsible for preparing the Enem. “It is sad to see that we have reached this situation in education.”
