Claudia Costin: With schools closed, we deprive children of lunch

THE CNN Specialist in education Claudia Costin said this Wednesday (6th) that depriving children and adolescents of school lunches during the Covid-19 pandemic was a mistake and ended up contributing to food insecurity and educational problems.

“How could we leave schools closed for two years for the most vulnerable, depriving children and young people of their lunch?”

Claudia Costin also highlighted that offering food to students in the basic education cycle in the public network is a “good practice built up over the years” in Brazil.

the speech of CNN Specialist occurs after the World Bank released the Brazilian Human Capital report, which points out that, due to the high risk of malnutrition or premature death, limited access to education and low quality of learning, a Brazilian born in 2019 will have, on average, 60% of their potential upon reaching the age of 18.

According to Costin, the World Bank report shows governments that “it is not only urgent to invest in children, but that if you don’t, the development and growth of a country will suffer”.

“Brazil needs to learn from Brazil”, highlighted the CNN Specialist adding that the good educational rates registered in Ceará and Pernambuco can serve as an inspiration for other governments to improve their own educational policies.
